How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?
The honest answer depends on your age, your health, and your eyes. A practical guide to exam timing for every stage of life.

Why Exam Frequency Matters More Than You Think
Vision rarely changes overnight. It drifts, quietly, and the brain adapts so well that many people do not realize how much clarity they have lost until a new prescription restores it. Meanwhile, several serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and macular degeneration, develop with no early symptoms at all. A comprehensive exam is the only reliable way to catch them early.
An exam is also a window into general health. Eye care professionals can spot signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune conditions during a routine visit, sometimes before other symptoms appear.
A Simple Schedule by Age
While your eye doctor may recommend a different interval for your situation, these are the widely accepted guidelines:
- Children: a first comprehensive exam around age three, another before starting school, then annually during the school years.
- Adults 18 to 39: at least every two years, or annually if you wear corrective lenses or spend long hours on screens.
- Adults 40 to 64: every one to two years, as presbyopia and early age-related changes typically begin in this window.
- Adults 65 and older: every year, since the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration rises with age.
Certain factors call for more frequent visits at any age: diabetes, a family history of eye disease, high prescriptions, previous eye surgery, or medications that affect vision.
Signs You Should Not Wait for Your Next Scheduled Exam
Some symptoms deserve prompt attention regardless of the calendar: sudden blur or double vision, flashes of light or a shower of new floaters, a shadow or curtain in your field of view, persistent eye pain, or a noticeable change in how you see at night. Any of these warrant a call to an eye care professional right away.
Making Exams Part of Your Routine
The easiest way to stay current is to anchor your exam to something you already remember: a birthday month, back-to-school season, or the start of the year. Keep your prescription history together, note any changes in comfort between visits, and bring your current eyewear to each exam so your provider can see exactly what you have been living in.
